Raised in California for much of her life, Jasmin Darznik was largely unaware of her mother Lili’s past in Iran. After Jasmin discovers an old photo of her mother as a teenage bride, Lili begins sending her tapes detailing her family’s history in Iran. Lili manages to escape her abusive marriage, but she is forced to leave behind her daughter, Sara, due to Iranian law which mandates that children must stay with their fathers. In spite of her heartbreaking circumstances, Lili pursues an education, and becomes the first woman in her family to obtain a degree.
