Nomination: Cleopatra’s Moon

Shecter, Vicky Alvear. Cleopatra’s Moon. 2011 (July). Arthur Levin Books. $18.99 (978-0-545-22130-6). Gr. 9 and up. [mpn]

The strong female protagonist is fascinating and very interesting. The well researched novel explores the life of Cleopatra Selence, only one of Cleopatra’s four children to actually reach adulthood.   Selence was a prisoner in Rome and in spite of the severe hardship and losses that she has to endure, she never seems to forget the determination and perseverance that her mother displayed when preserving her reign on the throne. Selene is able to overcome challenges and save her life so that she , too, can follow the determination of her mother to rule and secure her rightful return to the throne.
