This novel in verse introduces readers to Maya who is only 15 years old when her Hindu mother dies. She and her father travel from Canada to India with her mother’s ashes. When they arrive, they find the country in political turmoil.  Maya, half Hindu and half Sikh, has to deal with the conflict that is taking place all around her between two religious groups and she is not sure how to respond. She shrouds herself in silence. The poetic nature of the novel moves quickly with information about Maya’s journey and acceptance of her dual identity and strength.
