Nomination: Tomboy

downloadPrince, Liz. Tomboy. 2014. 256 p. Zest, $14.99 (978-1-936976-55-3). Gr.9-.

Tomboy Liz Prince struggles with her gender identity growing up and figuring out where girls like her fit into the social spectrum. A straight girl who wears boys’ clothes and plays with “boy” toys, Liz would prefer to be a boy as she believes boys have more room to be themselves as opposed to the cookie-cutter role girls are allowed to occupy. With the help of new friends, feminist zines, and the punk scene, she discovers that her problem is not who she is, but rather the expectations society puts on restrictive gender roles. (LZ)
