Mobley, Jeannie. Searching for Silverheels. 2014. 285pg. Margaret K. McElderry Books, Simon and Schuster. $16.99. (9781481400299) Grades 5-9 (kdm)
Thirteen year old Pearl loves to tell tourists to her small Colorado town the legend of the beautiful dancer, Silverheels, who nursed a whole town of miners during an outbreak of smallpox.  Her neighbor Josie is a suffragette who campaigns for women’s rights. She  contends that Silverheels was a thief and challenges Pearl to find out the truth. Romantic Pearl finds that the mystery she is trying to unravel, as well as the changes happening in her small town are far more complex than the “penny dreadful” novels she loves.
