Having grown up in Mississippi during the era of Jim Crow Laws, Fannie Lou Hamer was keenly aware of the injustices and racism that African Americans faced both politically and socially. Fannie Lou Hamer decided to stand up against this inequality and she played an integral part in the Civil Rights Movement by raising her voice and fighting for freedom until her death in 1977.
