Scheming to earn the funds to purchase her own bicycle, Wadjda challenges the idea of ‘acceptable’ behavior for girls in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, while dealing with the repercussions of her rebellious actions at school and changes for her family.

    The Green Bicycle perpetuates a damaging myth about Islam when it describes its protagonist hearing at her mosque that all non Muslims should be killed. I would recommend removing this from the list

    Dear Amy: thank you for your comment on the Amelia Bloomer Project List web site. We appreciate that you are using this list and thinking about it critically. That is one of our main goals!

    Haifaa al-Mansour, the author of The Green Bicycle, has said that the book is based on her experiences growing up in and currently living in Saudi Arabia in a small, conservative town. Once a list is published, we do not delete books unless there is a problem with publishing or copyright date. We always welcome feedback on our lists.
